![]() D. BRUCE SELBY STADIUM - MAP Plainsmen have not always had the advantage of hosting home games in such a prestigious facility as D. Bruce Selby Stadium. In fact, no one has been able to document exactly were the first few games were played. The EHS varsity football program began with the 1908 season, but the current high school was not built until 1911. During the next forty-three years, though, we know that home games were played on what is now the practice field adjacent south of the high school, and this facility served us well. As the seasons continued with capacity crowds, patrons and administrators saw the need for expansion and improvement of the football facilities for both spectators and players alike. In January 1953, a committee of 17 people was appointed by the Board of Education to study proposals for a new football stadium. A contract for architecture was awarded to Murray-Smith Associates of Enid in January 1954, and J.J. Reardon Construction Co. was awarded the contract for the northside bleachers two months later. Building of the 4630-seat stadium began at a cost of $131,197.00. Another milestone was reached on September 10, 1954, when the Enid Plainsmen routed the Garber Wolverines 28-6 in the first home football game played on Plainsmen Field. In March 1955, at a cost of $84,886.00, H.E. Cummins and Son Construction began construction of the 3630-seat southside bleachers. Over the years, many improvements have been added... lights, scoreboard, concession stands, pressbox. The building of Plainsmen Field was fulfilling a dream, and yet, for many there remained the desire to impress upon Plainsmen of today and tomorrow what the building of this stadium truly represented - the very spirit of what it means to be an Enid Plainsmen. There was a man in the history of the school whose life and character epitomized the ideals and virtues that Plainsmen still strive for today. That man was D. Bruce Selby. Serving in many capacities during his 40 years of employment - teacher, coach, principal, assistant superintendent, D. Bruce Selby won the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him. He was not only committed to providing the highest quality education to Enid students but also to developing each student into a better person. His expectations for his students were high, and time after time they rose to the level he demanded. When Mr. Selby was transferred to central office, students said, “Enid High School is going to miss his big booming laugh, his antics on stage during assemblies, and his rough voice issuing from behind the closed doors of his office, his audacity to speak for right, his fairness in dealing with others. D. Bruce Selby was deservedly well-respected and loved by students and co-workers alike, and years later Enid citizens still had not forgotten the man who did so much to shape the moral character of the students who passed through the halls of Enid High. Thus, in 1975, a formal name change to D. Bruce Selby Stadium was enacted by the Board of Education to honor this man. Today, his legacy continues as we honor the spirit of this man - his moral fiber, his strength of character and commitment to living life to the fullest, the goodness in him that draws us to him and continues to influence our lives years after he first became a Plainsmen. This is the spirit of Plainsmen Pride that we must make sure is never lost over time. As we enter the stadium and see the name of D. Bruce Selby Stadium, we are reminded that this field is a place of honor - to the man whose name it bears and the ideals and values he lived by - to the men and women whose participation in noble contests on this field today reflects those same ideals and values- and to the boys and girls who will become the Plainsmen of tomorrow and continue the tradition of highest standards in competition on this field. D. Bruce Selby Stadium was built and dedicated in pride, and Plainsmen today continue to bring pride to D. Bruce Selby Stadium. Janie Rivers Enid Board of Education
