HONIGSBERG FIELD HOUSE - MAP Honigsberg Field House was a dream of many people in Enid that had been impossible to achieve. Prior to the construction of the facility, only 1/3 of the football team could go into the locker room at half time. Weight facilities were at the high school and support of our student athletes through the facilities they used was in disarray. People with no students in the program believed that Enid could do better. The Plainsmen Foundation was formed in order to support student athletics. Its first project was to make the dream of the field house a reality. Fundraising commenced at a very high level and approximately one-half of the money was raised. Nevertheless, commitments could not be made for construction of the field house without a substantial loan or investment from some entity or person. The Foundation took this issue to interested parents and people in our community. After discussion of the dream that was to become a reality, and after advising citizens of Enid of the need for additional funds, a voice was heard from the back of the room at the Cherokee Strip Conference Center. “I’ll loan you the money” was the statement made by Irv Honigsberg. Mr. Honigsberg was advised that the Foundation may or may not be able to pay the money back and certainly could not afford interest. Mr. Honigsberg said that did not matter. As a result of the generosity of Irv and Ruth Ann Honigsberg, the Honigsberg Field House became a reality. Although the money was provided to the Foundation in order to allow us to finish the project as a loan, Irv and Ruth Ann generously converted their loan to a gift. The beautiful facility which students now enjoy is as a result of generosity from many people. Enid should be proud of this facility and the support to our students. However, at a very difficult time in its creation, one man stepped up and made a difference. That was Irv Honigsberg. His memory will endure and truly his generosity is an example for all who follow. A greater example of citizenship and support for a community is hard to find. The Plainsmen Foundation joins all people of Enid in thanking the Honigsberg family for the tremendous impact they’ve had on student athletics. Sincerely, Brad Gungoll The Plainsmen Foundation
